When to See an Eye Specialist (Ophthalmologist) in Singapore

Blurry vision or eye discomfort? While optometrists are great for vision tests and glasses, some conditions require a specialist. Here’s when you should see an Ophthalmologist (eye specialist) in Singapore for expert care.

1. For Medical and Surgical Conditions Ophthalmologists are medical doctors (MDs) who diagnose and treat serious eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. They can perform surgery, prescribe medication, and provide comprehensive medical eye care.

2. You Have Specific Concerning Symptoms Don't ignore persistent symptoms like sudden vision loss, floaters, flashes of light, eye pain, redness, or double vision. These could signal a serious underlying issue that requires immediate specialist attention.

3. Management of Chronic Diseases Affecting Eyes If you have conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, regular check-ups with an ophthalmologist are crucial. These diseases can damage the blood vessels in your retina over time, leading to vision loss if not monitored and managed.

4. What to Expect in Singapore You can find ophthalmologists in major public hospitals (SGH, NUH) or private specialist centres. A referral from a GP or polyclinic can sometimes be needed for subsidised rates in the public system. Check that they are accredited by the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Your vision is priceless. Seeking timely care from the right expert can prevent minor issues from becoming major problems and protect your sight for the long term.
